Your [Room to Breathe] Questions Answered

by | Sep 16, 2015 | No Comments

I’m so excited by the questions I’m getting about the upcoming Room to Breathe: Rewiring for Ease Program.

Here are the most recent ones:

Why is the title Rewiring for Ease?

This takes off of the new neuroscience research on brain plasticity. Our brains are not hardwired. With practice we can change old unproductive, unhealthy and no longer useful patterns. Here’s what my students say:

  • Rob in my last class told me that with the meditation practices and class teachings he saw how his fear of change kept him from pursuing his dream of getting a Master’s degree. He’s now in school starting his prerequisites and feels so much better about himself.
  • Emily says she used to break down into tears when the stress got to be too much. But she could never see it coming. After the course she says she so much better at reading her body’s signs that tension is rising. And instead of waiting for the stress to overtake her, she takes a few moments  to calm down and collect herself.  “My mood is so much more steady and I’m more fun to be around!”
  • Renee was on the verge of quitting. She was miserable. She worried she wasn’t good enough and suffered from never saying no to overtime shifts. In the beginning of the course she blamed the patients, her coworkers and boss for her frustrations. But with the course, she noticed that her moods and her negativity were connected to times of higher stress. Once she restored clearer boundaries around work and time off, without feeling guilty, she is much happier at work.

Is this course for me if I’m a health professional, but not a nurse?

Yes. This program is open to all health professionals. It’s for you if you need ways to reduce stress and overwhelm so you can have the caring connections and clear communications you desire. Working in health care is hard, but with Room to Breathe you’ll learn how to negotiate those stressful moments while building up your resilience and your relationships with coworkers, administrators and staff. You’ll also find, when you stress less, you have more energy and passion for the work you do.

Why is your focus primarily with nurses?

I’m a nurse, so my main audience tends to be nurses. When I think of the possibilities of more than 3 million nurses in the United States and 17 million worldwide leading the way toward #NoMoreStressAtWork# …I get chills. Not only for ourselves, but for the people we work with and the patients we care about. If someone you know might be helped by this course, please share this with them. It’s fun to take the course with a friend or two (or even your whole nursing unit…imagine that!)

What if I can’t make all the classes?

Got you covered here. It’s really great to be part of the live call, but if you can’t, you’ll have the live class recording sent to your email by the next afternoon. This way you’ll stay up with the course materials and can join in the discussions with me and your classmates on the closed FaceBook group. I’m really looking forward to that!

Is it going to fix all the problems we have in health care?

Sadly, no. At least not right away! But when each of us gains the tools that mindfulness practices provide, you’d be surprised by how much can change.

Imagine working along side your coworkers who also know how to be really collaborative, open-minded, flexible and creative at solving problems and relating to others.
