About 15 years ago I was walking down the street with my mom, complaining (really really kvetching) about how I wasn’t making enough of difference at the hospital or in the world.
Suddenly she stopped, grabbed me by the shoulders and turned me to look her square in the eyes. In a voice I never heard before, both stern and loving, she said, “You get up every day. You go to work. And you help people. That is enough.”
I still remember being unable to move while the wisdom of her words sunk in.
In that moment, though, and for weeks after, I couldn’t reconcile how to sustain hope for a healthy health care system with how to keep my energy in the game while doing it.
I was plagued with not-enough-ness.
I couldn’t keep relying on all my doing (because that would never feel like enough), I had to find sources that filled my “being” up.
In my search, I found I needed to stay healthy not only in body, but equally important were my mental, emotional and spiritual health.
You know the importance of keeping your physical reserves up with good food, sleep, exercise and making sure you don’t over use sugar, caffeine and alcohol to give you a boost or to relax.
But, given the inherent stressful nature of our environments, I want to bring your attention to the free and immediately available resources that can fuel your Vital Energy.
Vital Energy is that non-material fuel that feeds your passions, mind and spirit.
And when caring for others, witnessing suffering and working under stress, filling this aspect of yourself is essential to fill your cup–the well you give from.
